System Overview: Solanus is a world on the edge of nowhere. The planet is notable only for the sentient ocean that covers it, a murky sea so rich in chemicals that it can perform billions of thought processes within its depths.
Republic researchers classified the creature as a “super-brain”. The ocean is too large to move around independently and keeps to itself, often contemplating its own existence for years on end.
The world was first discovered hundreds of years ago when a Republic scout ship received a massive “data dump” into its computer core within a few seconds. The upload fried navigation system and much of the ship’s on-board systems. The ship was forced to land and the scout, who was the second son to a noble house within the core worlds, spent several weeks establishing what had occurred. Eventually he learned to communicate with the creature.
The Noble House sent a rescue cruiser, which collected the young man. Unfortunately the experience of interacting directly with the creature sent the young noble mad, and consequently, the system was labelled off-limits and dangerous.
The creature learned quickly what it had done, and so refrained from participating in galactic affairs, instead preferring to spend its time playing with the minerals which formed within the ocean by shaping and reforming intricate crystal structures both above and beyond the waves.
In the last 50 years, specially designed and protected scout ships have been authorised to visit the world to learn more of its current state. It was quickly learned that the creature has remained completely inert, although there are still electromagnet signs that the creature is alive. Scientists differ in their opinions as to what the creature is doing, and theories currently range from it suffering the effects of some type of illness, to the belief that it is in some type of deep metaphysical thought process. No theory has been proved, however with the Emperor’s yearning for knowledge for things which can potentially be exploited and wielded by the dark side, he has authorised scientists to establish a base on the planet to study the world and the creature.
The world has no government structure, and no known native sentient life forms, although scientists speculate that this may soon be proven to be false. The research station, which houses thousands of scientists from around the galaxy, including the famed bionetic scientist and cybernetic specialist Doctor Nycolai Kinesworthy, is managed directly by Clandes Industrial, a subsidiary company of Cestus Cybernetics. Clandes Industrial were awarded an Imperial contract to develop stronger alloys and investigate the mysteries of the seemingly sentient ocean. Rumours persist that the Emperor himself has appointed an Imperial Inquisitor to oversee the operations. The Empire maintains a strong presence in the system.
